Here are some comments from someone who attended and then posted on the Next Door app...
You know, people are really irritating me today & have been this whole week especially. Here we are, trying to get our community behind us, trying to seek out parents that will stand with us and "fight the good fight" for our children. We have reached out on every platform of social media. We have printed up and passed out fliers. We have made signs. We have done everything we can think of to get more people involved.
Last night at our meeting with the School Administrators, we had a good showing. Several parents showed up that we had not met before. As a very proud parent of an amazing student at Washington HS, I get involved with as much as I can. I learned LONG AGO that I don't just have one child in school. I have hundreds. Last year, the unofficial head count for the school exceeded 1,100. This year, I have been told there is more. Of those students, how many parents showed up? 1,000? Nope. 400? Not even close. 100? Unfortunately no. Less than 30? Yes, you read that correctly. THIRTY parents, concerned with what is going on in our school, showed up in support.
Things got heated at the end, mostly because we are tired of not getting answers or seeing any results. I think we had an impact. I hope that we can begin to see results soon. This is getting old already and above and beyond all of that, we shouldn't be fighting for what we are to begin with.
Things were said that hopefully hit NB him and was an eye opener to a few of the audience members. Will change come? I hope so. I hope & pray that we can get beyond these items and can begin t ok build a positive relationship with the School Administrators and the KCK School Board.
We need help though. A wise person once said, "there is strength in numbers." We don't need the negativity. We don't need to hear, "well, I'm just going to move my child to a different school." That is not solving the matters and issues at hand. They may solve them for one, but what about the hundreds you and your child is leaving behind? We are reaching out to all Washington HS parents, students, and alumni. Please, PLEASE, stand up, let us hear your voice, join us in making positive changes for ALL of our current and future students. We need your backing!
